Case Study

Sagip

SAGIP is a mobile-first digital platform that addresses blood supply accessibility by digitizing blood donor registration and blood request applications. It connects donors, recipients, and healthcare facilities through a centralized system, enabling users to locate nearby donation centers, submit applications directly, and access educational resources on blood donation and eligibility.

Problem

Problem

Before SAGIP, blood donation and request processes faced several critical challenges:

  • Difficulty locating available blood donors, especially for specific blood types, due to reliance on fragmented social media posts and informal networks.

  • Lack of a centralized platform to identify where and how blood donation or blood requests could be formally submitted to healthcare facilities.

  • Limited accessibility to accurate information, making it harder for donors and recipients to navigate the donation process efficiently.

  • Persistent stigma and misinformation surrounding blood donation, discouraging potential donors from participating.

These challenges resulted in delayed responses, inefficient coordination, and reduced donor participation during critical situations.

Solution

Solution

To address these challenges, we developed SAGIP, a centralized digital platform that:

  • Implemented digital blood donor registration and tracking, enabling users to manage donation-related information through a centralized platform.

  • Built a blood request submission and medical review workflow, allowing patients or facilities to submit requests evaluated by healthcare professionals.

  • Integrated facility discovery, education, and incentives,

helping users locate nearby donation centers while encouraging informed and continued participation.

Technical approach

Technical approach

  • Developed a mobile application using React Native, enabling a cross-platform experience for donors and requesters.

  • Implemented Firebase Authentication and Firebase Database to manage user accounts, donor records, and blood request data in real time.

  • Integrated the Google Maps API to help users locate nearby blood donation centers directly within the application.

Impact & outcome

Impact & outcome

  • Created a centralized digital space connecting blood donors, individuals in need, and healthcare facilities through a single platform.

  • Improved access to blood donation and request information, enabling users to identify where and how blood can be donated or requested through verified health centers.

  • Established an educational and awareness hub,

helping users understand the importance and benefits of blood donation while addressing common misconceptions.

Challenges & learnings

Challenges & learnings

  • Driving adoption and awareness, as the platform required convincing users of the value and necessity of a centralized blood donation and request system.

  • Learning and implementing React Native under time constraints, as this project marked my first experience building a mobile application during a hackathon environment.

  • Adapting quickly to new technologies and tools, balancing rapid development with functional and reliable feature delivery.

This project strengthened my ability to learn new technologies quickly, build under pressure, and adapt to unfamiliar technical stacks, contributing to the team’s 2nd place finish in our first hackathon.
